2011, DEC 24: LAOS, VIENTIANE-Buddha Park

Deepa and the tuk-tuk showed up at our hotel at 8:00 a.m., and we embarked on our day’s sightseeing.

It was a cloudy day. Cold air slapped our faces as we raced in the open-sided tuk-tuk, on a dusty, unpaved road, along the Mekong River, toward Buddha Park, our first destination this morning.

Buddha Park is 15 miles out of town. It was conceived of and built by shamanist priest, in the 1950’s. Influenced by a Hindu sage, under whom he had studied in Vietnam, he created fantastic
sculptures in an attempt to integrate Hinduism and Buddhism. Made of reinforced concrete, the sculptures depict gods, demons, humans and animals.

Some of the sculptures are bizarre and fanciful such as the giant three-story pumpkin-like
structure.
Others are easily recognized and include the Reclining Buddha;...
...and Hindu deities Shiva,...
...Krishna...
...Lakshmi,...
...and the Sikh Guru Nanak, with his first two disciples, Bala and Mardana.
